You know... I wonder why they used the spices. I feel they would have known the prophecy. So we're they doubting? Were they unsure? We're they inspired to do so so that the guards wouldn't be suspicious? ... Hmm...
Thank you for your comment Kailey. I'm not sure any of Jesus's followers understood what was happening as it was unfolding. Even though He had taught the disciples and told them out right what would happen- I still don't think they got it. And I don't think they considered Old Testament prophecies either--until Jesus ascended and the Holy Spirit came and taught them and they finally understood how it all fit together in God's plan.
As for the spices, I think they did what they would normally do when one of their own died-which was include spices when wrapped for burial. Since Joseph and Nicodemus were "secret" believers, they probably knew even less about what was happening as I suspect they didn't get to hear Jesus very much. And for those two men, it was a hurried situation. Jesus gave up His life about 3:00, then they had to get permission for Jesus's body from Pilate, buy linen, buy spices, get Jesus's body off the cross, spiced, wrapped, and in the tomb before dark. Passover began at sundown that Friday night. All had to be completed by sundown.
