Mighty God: What Does it Mean?
Mighty God: What does it mean?
One of the names of the coming Messiah (Jesus) given in the prophecy written by Isaiah hundreds of years before His birth was Mighty God.
“For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6.
The word “mighty” is used many times in the Old Testament. It means hero, warrior, powerful, and strong. By the time Isaiah wrote God’s prophecy, everyone understood what “mighty” meant. Many human men were described as mighty. When this word is used, it describes a strong warrior.
For example:
Nimrod was described as a mighty hunter before the Lord. Genesis 10:9.
When Joshua was leading the people against Ai, he chose 30,000 warriors (mighty). Joshua 8:3.
Boaz, Ruth’s future husband, was described as a mighty man of the family. Ruth 2:1.
Young David was described as a man who could play the harp but was also mighty warrior. I Samuel 16:18.
David described God as mighty in many Psalms. He says the Lord is strong and mighty and that He is mighty in battle. Psalm 24:8.
There are hundreds of other verses that use the word mighty. Perhaps today our equivalent of “mighty” warriors would be soldiers that are the best of the best. They are the bravest of the brave. Heroes who put their lives on the line to do what others couldn’t do to get the job done.
Now that we know what mighty means, Isaiah describes the coming Messiah as Mighty God. This name, which shows the character of God, includes all of the attributes we think of in human heroes, but with the added reality that He is God.
We know that God means: Strength, Strong God, The one true God, Ruler of all nations, Almighty God, Almighty Creator.
So Mighty God means:
Our hero, our strong powerful warrior, is our one true God, who is the Ruler of all nations, Almighty God, the Almighty Creator.
That is who Jesus is.
He is ready, willing and able to help us live our lives for Him.
