Jesus, Son of David
Old Testament prophecy fulfilled by Jesus
The Messiah, Jesus, would descend from the line of King David
God made a covenant with King David that his descendant would have a kingdom forever.
“When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.” 2 Samuel 7:12-13
God gave the prophet Isaiah another confirmation that the Messiah would come from David (in the following verse it mentions Jesse-David’s father).
“Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.” Isaiah 11:1
The prophet Jeremiah also wrote God’s words of the future Messiah, the Son of David:
“’Behold, the days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I shall raise up for David a righteous Branch; and He will reign as king and act wisely, and do justice and righteousness in the land. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely; and this is His name by which He will be called, The Lord our righteousness.’” Jeremiah 23:5-6
Both genealogies of Jesus show that He descended from David (and from Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Judah). Click here for my blog on the genealogies of Jesus: https://closertojesus.substack.com/p/the-two-genealogies-of-jesus
The angel, Gabriel, made it clear that Jesus was THE ONE who would fulfill the prophecies of the Messiah, the Son of David, when he told Mary:
“And behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and His kingdom will have no end.” Luke 1:31-33
During the lifetime of Jesus, the people understood that the term Son of David was a Messianic title. For example, at the triumphal entry in Jerusalem, the multitudes cried out:
“Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed in He who comes in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.” Matthew 21:9
All through the Old Testament, God inspired the writers of scripture to write prophesies. I suspect they didn’t understand much about the future they wrote about. But God used them to prepare the way. And every detail happened exactly how God told them it would.
