Jesus, Born of a Virgin
Old Testament prophecy fulfilled by Jesus:
The Messiah, Jesus, would be born of a virgin.
The last few weeks, I’ve written about the Old Testament prophecies of who the Messiah would be. Jesus fulfilled every prophecy.
To recap so far:
The Messiah would:
Come from the seed of a woman, and would ultimately crush the head (destroy) Satan. Genesis 3:14
Come through the line of Abraham-and through Abraham all nations would be blessed by the Messiah. Genesis 18:17-18
Come from the tribe of Judah. Genesis 49:8-10, Micah 5:2, Matthew 1:1-16, Luke 3:23-38
Come from the line of King David. Jeremiah 23:5-6, Isaiah 9:7, Matthew 1:1, Luke 1:31-33
Would be born in Bethlehem. Micah 5:2, Matthew 2:1-6
This week, the pivotal moment of all history—the birth of the promised Messiah—rested on the shoulders of one Jewish teenage girl-a virgin. Mary, the one chosen by God Almighty to give birth to His son.
The Old Testament didn’t name the woman who would be given this honor. But God gave Isaiah this prophecy:
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14
The gospel writers made it clear who this virgin was that gave birth to the Messiah, Jesus. The apostle Matthew wrote that before Mary had relations with her husband, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. Matthew explained that this was a fulfillment of Isaiah 7:14. Matthew 1:18-24
Luke, the gospel writer, makes it clear that the angel Gabriel came to the virgin Mary to tell her that she would conceive the Son of the Most High God. He explained that the Holy Spirit would overshadow her and the baby would be the Son of God.
It is critical to understand that Jesus, the Messiah, is the Son of God and fulfillment of propecy.
The miracle of the virgin birth is not the end of the prophecies of Jesus, the Messiah. There are many, many more.
