Old Testament prophecy fulfilled by Jesus:
He would bear our sicknesses and pains.
Hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, God revealed to Isaiah details about the coming Messiah. The prophet wrote down in Isaiah 53 powerful, accurate details about the Messiah who would come as a suffering servant.
In Isaiah 53:2, we are told that there would be nothing about the way He looked that would attract us to Him. This makes me wonder what Jesus looked like. He must have been average looking, or perhaps even below average. I’m sure He would not have looked like the images of Jesus that show Him with light brown hair and blue eyes-the Gentile version of Jesus. I suspect Jesus looked like any other Jewish man of His day. Maybe this shows us that it is the heart that counts, not the face.
The next verse in Isaiah says:
“However, it was our sicknesses that He Himself bore,
And our pains that He carried.”
Isaiah 53:4a.
So how do we know that this verse in Isaiah 53 refers to Jesus, the Messiah? Matthew tells us in chapter 8.
Jesus had healed the Centurion’s servant, then Peter’s mother-in-law. When people in the land heard that Jesus could heal the sick and diseased, they flocked to Him. Matthew tells us,
“Now when evening came, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were ill. This happened so that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled: ‘He Himself took our illnesses and carried away our diseases.’” Matthew 8:16-17.
Jesus, the Messiah, still carries our pain-every sort of pain
